As a homeowner, it’s easy to find yourself overwhelmed with all the decisions you have to make, especially when it comes to roofing. To those who do not know a lot about roofing, it may seem like a pretty simple process consisting of picking a roofing material you like and nailing it down. In reality, there is a lot more that goes into roofing.

A common mistake that a lot of homeowners make starting out is choosing their roofing material ahead of time and basing their roofing contractor on that decision. This is entirely the wrong way to go about this, as the quality of your roofing contractor should always be the top priority. A roof is an expensive yet necessary investment, the wrong roofing company can mess up this investment for you in major ways.

Today’s article is all about the importance of choosing a quality roofing contractor instead of limiting your options early on. We will also cover how to find a quality roofer and what red flags to look out for.

Roofing Contractors: How they affect your roof

The impact that roofing contractors can have on your roof and the overall job itself is astounding. First, you want to make sure that they are truly a reputable company and not just one you selected because they have the material brand you want. With almost any reputable roofing company you can sleep better knowing that the roof you paid for was installed properly, without skipping any steps.

Another thing that comes into play here is the warranties they offer. If a roofing company believes in their work and truly stands behind it, as they should, they should offer you a warranty ranging anywhere from 10 to 25 years. Other roofing companies may still offer you a workmanship warranty, but it may be for a lesser amount of time. This is often a red flag and a lesson most people who fail to do their homework ahead of time learn the hard way.

Things to keep in mind about roofing contractors

Choosing a roofing contractor is far more important than choosing the specific material type you want for a few reasons. Without a quality roofing contractor, the materials will not be able to be installed at all. This doesn’t mean that any roofing company can do the job correctly. Sadly, there are some roofing companies out there that truly are in it for the money and will do a rushed job, leaving you with a poor installation and wasting your money.

This does not mean you should get up on your roof and install it yourself either. We actually strongly advise against that. Though it may seem like a cheaper option, you are not only putting yourself in danger but your home too. Without proper training, the chances of an improper installation occurring are very high. This will lead to damage down the line and will cost you much more money to fix than the initial installation would have.

Value their professional opinion

Most homeowners, especially first-time ones, don’t know much about roofing at all. In fact, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to decide on a roofing material that is not even compatible or the best option for their home.

Another benefit of working with a reputable roofing company is having access to their professional opinion. Any quality roofing company will perform a thorough roof inspection prior to starting any type of roof work. After the inspection is when they will go over their findings with you and offer up their professional opinion on what materials or solutions would work best with your roof.

Not all roofs are the same and there are a lot of different factors that can play into choosing a roofing material. These things include but are not limited to the slope of your roof, the status of your roof currently, the amount of flashing/additives on your roof, and even the weather of your area. A reputable roofer will be able to point out any concerns about your roof as well as steer you in the right direction, saving you from problems with your roof down the road.

Finding the right roofing company to work with

We know that finding a quality roofing contractor is key when it comes to getting any roof work done, but how exactly do you know which roofing companies are good and which aren’t? While you can never be 100% sure, there are 3 key things to look at that will help you make your decision. There is more to consider as well, but we won’t go too in-depth here as we have covered this before on our Learning Hub where we post educational roofing content every single week.

Online reviews – It is extremely important to read a roofing company’s reviews online prior to hiring them for any type of work. The reviews a company has will give you an insight into previous clients’ experiences with them. The way the company responds to the reviews is also important to note. For example, if a roofing company responds to a displeased customer with anger or snarky remarks, that is not a good sign. All companies make mistakes here and there, but any reputable roofer would graciously reply with their apologies and make it right with the customer.

Years in business/experience   This is not to say that newer companies are bad at all. If you are in a pinch for a time or never worked with a roofing company before, you may be safer going with a roofing company that has been around for a while and has good reviews. Older companies tend to have more experience as they have seen more things and handled more unique situations.

More experience, in general, is always a huge plus as the likeness of them handling a situation similar to yours before is high. More experience tends to equate to fewer mistakes happening as they have already gone through the learning process that comes with some unique situations. To check how long a company has been in business and their experience we suggest looking at their website, specifically their “About Us” page, and reading their reviews online. If you still can’t find what you are looking for, contact them directly. The way they answer your questions may be enough for you to decide if you want to move forward with them or not.

Licensed and Insured – You also want to make sure that the company you hire is both licensed and insured. This is an extra level of security that both protects you and them as a company. Any reputable roofing company will have both of these things. If you cannot find proof of this on their website do not hesitate to ask them as it is not an uncommon question. Any professional company knows the importance of these things and will be happy to show proof to a potential customer.

Wrapping it up

We understand that the world of roofing is foreign to many and can come across as extremely confusing. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the little things such as choosing a specific material color or type, but at the end of the day, the quality of your roofer is what matters the most.

When choosing a roofing company never hesitate to ask questions. Any reputable company will have answers for them all and will gladly have a conversation with you. Another thing we like to stress is to trust your gut. If you have a bad feeling about a company, trust it and move on to the next. While there are a lot of great roofing companies out there, there are also some bad ones, and it’s important to avoid those.

The right roofing company will help you through the entire process, giving you their honest professional opinion and answering any questions you may have along the way. We hope that you now have a better understanding of why choosing the right roofing company is more important than choosing the roofing material first.
